On the Inca Trail, there are over 250 known species of orchids, as well as numerous rare birds, animals, and reptiles including several species considered to be in danger of extinction. There will of course be insects, especially at lower elevations. It’s always a good idea to bring insect repellent with you just to be sure. There are insects that are not familiar looking so chances are that they could bite. The area is also well known for hosting several species of gorgeous butterflies (mariposas).
