What is Community Based Tourism?

Community based tourism is the epitome of sustainable tourism, as it begins with local communities.  It is tourism that is based in the community territory, and where the community as a whole or its members have substantial control and involvement of the tourism project.  A major proportion of the benefits of the tourism remain in the community, where it can lead to conservation of the environment by providing a financial reason to protect the natural resources.  Finally, the project has been approved by the elected representatives of the community and the relevant higher order organization, keeping it from benefitting only one community member or family, but rather benefiting the entire community.
