WHY THIS TRIP
The upper Amazon Basin provides thrilling whitewater rafting, and the areas just outside Quito happen to contain some of the best stretches in Ecuador. The Amazon River Rafting trip combines two of Ecuador’s best one-day stretches into a more comprehensive journey, allowing for more interaction with the local culture and time to reflect on the natural surroundings.
TRIP DESCRIPTION
The Jatunyacu (“Big Water”) stretch is aptly named for the Class III+ waves and holes that provide a lot of fun. Along the way, you hike to natural pool for swimming, to admire crystal-clear waterfalls, and to observe lush jungle scenery. After this run, you relax in a riverside lodge and fall asleep listening to the water outside.
The next day you travel to a more remote, less-well known canyon to begin your rafting. Again, the morning starts with a plunge into natural pools near the put in and then the adventure begins. This is a more challenging day (Class III – IV) and requires a bit more grunt work, but it will be worth it.
When you’re not tackling rapids, the guide will point out the myriad birdlife you’re likely to encounter in the canopy. On the last day, you get to meet local indigenous Kichwa families and learn about their culture firsthand. Before the return to Quito, you have a well-deserved soak in the natural Papallacta hotsprings.
This trip is all about appreciating the diverse ecosystems present in such a small country and the impressive biodiversity the rainforest contains. The exciting whitewater rafting is one such way to enjoy these landscapes and the trip is designed to be more than just an adrenaline rush (though it certainly doesn’t fall short there!).
Guides for this tour are specially trained in whitewater guiding techniques and safety procedures. There are also certified safety kayakers who can also interpret the natural surroundings of the area. The guides and kayakers are all there to make sure you have a fun, heart-pumping adventure and to find appreciation of these beautiful areas.
