WHY THIS TRIP
Belize is rightfully famous for its beautiful cayes (islands) and the world’s second longest barrier reef, with world class snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, kayaking and other outdoor water sports and relaxation. But just a short trip inland lies a spectacular hilly jungle with Mayan ruins, beautiful rivers and numerous caves, some with rivers flowing through them and others full of Mayan artifacts. To experience the best of Belize, you really should experience both. Lucky for you, this trip does just that!
Your adventure starts at a jungle resort in Western Belize, just a short distance from the coast, from where we spend the next three days exploring the incredible Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) caves, learning to kayak on the Mopan River, exploring the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich, and cave kayaking on the Caves Branch River before finishing up in Belize City. If you only have 4 days in Belize you can join us for the first few days of this adventure as a stand-alone package – please inquire.
Next we travel out to sea to our private island on Long Caye, on the outer reef of Glover’s Reef, a National Marine Reserve. Glover’s atoll (an atoll is a ring of coral surrounding an island) is one of only four atolls in the Western Hemisphere, and it is home to incredible coral and fish. Long Caye Resort is powered by the sun and the wind, with rustic but comfortable private bungalows perched on the shore where they catch the cooling breezes. There is a huge open-air dining hall, and there are composting toilets and solar showers to keep you comfortable while minimizing the eco footprint of the resort.
Here you can choose how you spend your days, as you are free to relax or try various activities each day. You can swim and snorkel from the beach, and we use sea kayaks to access incredible snorkeling sites and other islands in the atoll. Not far from the beach we have our own private wave, and you can use our high-quality surf kayaks, surf boards, and paddleboards to learn to surf at one of the best beginner surf spots in Belize. There are also fully-outfitted fishing kayaks and windsurfing rigs for all levels. World-class kitesurfing and scuba diving are also available for an extra fee.
We spend 3 nights on the island, with guided sport activity and instruction sessions offered from early morning until late at night. The island portion of the package is also available as a stand alone, 5-night adventure tour – please inquire.
This trip is designed for those looking for active vacations, and although no experience is required, some guests may find the activities strenuous (particularly elements of the ATM cave tour and the portages on the Caves Branch River). Each sport is introduced, taught, and guided by expert guides, and each sport is suitable for a complete beginner in good shape. People who are in good physical shape and have a good attitude will do fine. Hundreds of our guests have commented that this Belize adventure vacation was the best of their lives. Come see for yourself why our guests return year after year!
