DAY 1: Arrive in Costa Rica

A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Our representative will go over your trip and answer any questions you may have. Evening free to explore San Jose.

DAY 2: Mountain Biking Irazu Volcano to Turrialba

The Fun Begins. We leave San Jose heading east to Cartago and then up to the top of the Irazu Volcano, Costa Ricas tallest Volcano at 3400 meters above sea level. After some time to explore the lunar like craters of the volcano we begin the first mountain bike section of the trip. The first part of the route takes us across the saddle that connects the Irazu Volcano with the Turrialba Volcano. The Turrialba Volcano is quite active and it is common to see smoke coming out of it’s crater. We pass a few kilometers from the crater then begin a long descent past several dairy and vegetable farms on our way down the volcano. Tonight we stay in the clouds, halfway down the Turrialba Volcano at the very comfortable San Rafael Camp.

DAY 3: Mountain Biking & Canyoneering

Back on the bikes for a ride to a nearby waterfall with some time for a swim at the base of the falls. From here we continue down to the town of Turrialba for some lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon is spent canyoning – abseiling down waterfalls and zipping through the jungle. After this full on day we head back to San Rafael Camp for another evening in the clouds.

DAY 4: Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting

This morning, after breakfast, you will be part of a two-day white water rafting trip, so we will drive you to the “put in” at La Cruz, the upper gateway to the raging Pacuare River. This overnight Pacuare Adventure is a Paddle and Hike expedition. Not only we will raft a variety of exciting rapids, but we will also hike to pristine waterfalls, fun swimming holes and primary jungles. The first day we will run 13kms (8 miles) of continuous class III whitewater for a total of 14 rapids. Then we will arrive at our river lodge or campsite shortly past noon, on time for lunch.

The lodge and campsite is located right next to the river in the middle of a primary forest it offers you safari-style facilities, with large comfortable walk-in tents permanently set on spacious wooden platforms. Gardens are very well taken care of, perfectly blending with their surroundings. Modern toilets and showers are also available for your use.

Rafting: 8 mi / 13 km

DAY 5: Pacuare Whitewater Rafting & Travel to the Coast

The Pacuare carries us through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. We maneuver through the exhilarating rapids and in gentler sections you can see into the rainforest at the river’s edge. The second day begins with a hot, freshly brewed cup of Costa Rica’s famous coffee. After a hearty breakfast is served and we pack our gear, our river descent continues.

All of the class IV rapids are on this day, so now it is time to truly test the skills you learned on the previous day. We finish in Siquirres, at our own private warehouse, where you can take a shower, change and enjoy the gardens and terrace while having a beer or two and reflecting with your new friends about the great adventure you just shared before to begin your two-hour drive to the Caribbean coast of the country.

DAY 6: Free Day on the Caribbean Coast

Free time to enjoy the crystal clear, blue water lining the coast. Puerto Viejo is also famous as a surfing destination. It has a relaxed atmosphere with a mix of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultures. Locals usually speak their own language called Patois (pronounced “patua”) which is a mix of Afro-Caribbean English, Spanish and French. Puerto Viejo is alively place for tourists to have a fun and relaxing experience. This area offers a lot of attractions and activities. Optional activities include: scuba diving, snorkeling, visit to Cahuita National Park, the Sloth Sanctuary or the Kekoldi Indian Reserve & waterfalls.

DAY 7: Free Morning at the Beach & Return to San Jose

The morning is free to relax around the hotel or on the beach. After lunch we head back to San José, about 5 hours away. You will gasp at the beauty of breathtaking views as we pass through high cloud forest, misty mountains, deep, steep, river-carved canyons, the spectacular Braulio Carrillo National Park.

DAY 8: Depart Costa Rica

One of our representatives will drive you today back to the International Airport for your return flight home.
